I have three personal goals for 2017:
Eat a minimum of 1,100 servings of fruits and vegetables (stretch goal is 1,500). This is a little over 3 servings per day on average, minimum, and a little over 4 servings per day, stretch.
Complete 100 workouts minimum (stretch goal is 150). This is a little under 2 workouts per week on average, minimum, and a little under 3 workouts per week, stretch.
Write and publish a minimum of 350 answers on Quora, most of which I’ll republish as blog posts on here (stretch goal is 500). This is an average of about 1 answer per day, minimum. I was inspired to do this after reading Nicolas Cole’s The Ultimate Guide to Quora.

I’ve only chosen three goals because I want to narrow my focus and these are the three things I’ve identified as the lead dominos for improving the areas of my life I care most about right now.
What are lead dominos?
The purpose of lead dominos is simple. If I do well at these things, then they will snowball into other good things.
By eating 3–4 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, I’ll eat less junk food. This will give me the energy every day to do things for my wife and family.
By completing 2–3 workouts a week, I’ll hit PRs in the gym and get stronger.
By writing one answer a day, even if the answers are only 300 words each, I’ll write over 100,000 words in a year, which is enough content for several new books. There is also a good chance I’ll build an audience in the process.
All of these goals incorporate “the three C’s” of goal setting: control, consistency, and congruency, which I talk more about in this post.
I’m not waiting until January 1 to start, either. I’ve already begun. Here’s why.
12/31/16 update: I first wrote down these goals on November 30, 2016. During the month of December 2016, here is what I accomplished:
- Health: 61 servings of fruits and vegetables
- Fitness: 9 workouts
- Writing: 38 Quora posts, 23,400 words
Servings of fruits and vegetables averaged about 2 per day, which is less than my minimum goal of 3 per day. This needs improvement. December was a tough month to eat healthy with the holidays and travel. We also moved into a new house and I did very little cooking. So considering all of this, I did okay.
I averaged more than 2 workouts per week, which was great. I did well to maintain consistency going to the gym despite the chaos of the holidays and moving.
I performed better in the writing department than any other in December. I wrote on average more than 1 post per day and cranked out over 23,000 words, which is a little over 750 per day, on average. I don’t expect to keep up this rate in 2017, but I’ll be happy if I can go a full year averaging 300 words per day, which would put me over 100,000 for the year.
4/18/17 update: Here is what I’ve accomplished so far in 2017:
- Health: 409.5 servings of fruits and vegetables
- Fitness: 27 workouts
- Writing: 89 posts, 50,913 words
